The Johansson apartments were located in a residential complex for middle-class families, but they did not count themselves among them. “The parents had four children! We lived on charity, we were given food stamps. ” Perhaps this undermined Melanie and Carsten’s marriage. When Scarlett was 13, her mother moved to California with her older children, and she and her twin brother stayed with their father. By that time, the name of the young actress Scarlett Johansson was already heard.
Scarlett’s parents tried to bring their children into the world of art when they had barely learned to speak. The family brought the twins to an advertising casting, but as a result, the director of the video liked only the eldest son Adrian. However, this case gave birth to a touching dream inside baby Scarlett – to become an actress.
Melanie was an avid filmmaker, especially musicals, so she supported her daughter’s wishes, and when she turned 8, she was sent to Lee Strasberg Theater University in Manhattan. The girl was included in the group for gifted children, but in the first six months, she revealed her abilities so impressively that she became too bored in the children’s club, and Scarlett was transferred to the group for adults. In 1994, 10-year-old Scarlett Johansson debuted in the film “North” with aspiring actor Elijah Wood. In 1995, she was on the same stage with Sean Connery in the film “Fair Court”,. Critics commented on her play: “Scarlett radiates good vibes. And if she can get through the transition without losing that vibration, she will become a great actress. ”
Scarlett Johansson’s “childhood” period was summed up by the touching film “Horse Spellcaster” with Robert Redford. The role of the girl who lost her leg in an accident was performed so sincerely that after the filming, Redford himself admitted that the 13-year-old baby behaved like an adult actress. Although to get this role, Scarlett slumped. During the audition, when asked by Robert if she had ridden a horse before, she replied, “Yes, of course!”, Meaning a plastic rocking horse.
THE BEGINNING OF AN “ADULT” CAREER
As time went on, Scarlett Johansson’s roles grew deeper. The 2001 film Ghost World received an impressive number of rave reviews, but only two of the three main actors were nominated for the Golden Globe: Torah Birch and Steve Buscemi, although the heroine Scarlett Johansson fell in love with the audience no less.
The Cohen brothers’ film “The Man Who Wasn’t” caused a great deal of criticism: the storyline between Billy Bob Thornton and young Birdie, in which Scarlett was played, was received very ambiguously, but Thornton was impressed by their work together.
Johansson’s early filmography also included rather bizarre episodes, such as the horror film Spider Attack, in which the girl’s heroine had to escape an attack by giant radioactive insects alongside Kari Wurer and David Arquette.
2003 was a fateful year for the actress. On August 29, Sofia Coppola’s film “Translation Difficulties” was released on the big screens. Scarlett, 19, played young Charlotte, Bill Murray’s companion on a spontaneous trip to Tokyo. The daughter of the famous Francis Coppola said that she chose Johansson because of the calm, wise look of a thirty-year-old woman, which is uncharacteristic of other young actresses.
A bright film about the difficulty of adapting in a foreign country and the attraction that arose between such dissimilar people, united by only one language and a sense of all-consuming loneliness, was to the liking of critics and viewers alike and gave Johansson an unprecedented boost.
This was followed by the premiere of Peter Webber’s film “The Girl with the Pearl Earring”, which introduced viewers to the history of Jan Vermeer’s masterpiece. The role of the Danish painter was played by Colin Firth, and Scarlett was the screenwriter for the world-famous portrait. Thanks to “Girl” in 2004, the actress won the Golden Globe Award.
A year later, Woody Allen presented to the public a new film – the drama “Match Point”, which tells the personal tragedy of former tennis legend Chris Wilton, who is in love with the heroine Scarlett. The film added another Golden Globe to the actress’ collection of awards.
In the same year, 2005, another large-scale tape featuring Johansson was released, but radically opposite to “Match Point” in terms of atmosphere. This is Michael Bay’s anti-utopian blockbuster “Island”, where the girl first appeared in a duet with Ewan McGregor. The film was received very coldly, which the producers unscrupulously accused Scarlett, saying that she “could play sexier.”
In 2006, with a difference of a couple of months, three rating films were released: “Sensation” with Hugh Jackman, “Black Orchid” with Josh Hartnett, and the Oscar-winning “Prestige” with Christian Bale. In all the projects, Scarlett played the main female characters, and the pictures and, accordingly, the roles were very diverse – fascinated by the British aristocrat student Sonda Pranski, former prostitute Kay Lake and assistant magician Olivia Wensky.
The next important stage in Scarlett’s career was her role in the melodrama The Nanny Diaries. The film told viewers about the adventures of a girl named Annie Braddock, who had just graduated from college and faced a difficult life dilemma: to dedicate herself to a favorite but not profitable business – anthropology, or put her dream on the altar of material stability. In search of a solution, she settles in a well-to-do family with a certain Mrs. X, and in the course of the development of the plot begins an affair with the “Harvard handsome man” – Chris Evans.
In 2008, a new era came for Scarlett Johansson – her talent was noticed by the creators of superhero action movies. The pioneer was director Frank Miller, who invited the girl to the film “Avengers” (not to be confused with “Avengers”). The actress played a cold and unpredictable friend of the character Gabriel Macht, and the role of the main villain was taken by Samuel L. Jackson.
In 2010, the premiere of the sequel to the movie “Iron Man”, which instantly conquered the ratings thanks to the brand charm of Robert Downey Jr. In this film, Scarlett Johansson first appeared in the role of Natasha Romanoff, a former KGB special agent nicknamed the “Black Widow”.
Over the next 5 years, Scarlett demonstrated the superpowers of her favorite character three more times: in “Avengers” (2012), the second part of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), and a kind of spin-off about Captain America “The First Avenger: Another War” (2014 ).
At the dawn of her acting career, Scarlett appeared in music videos for Justin Timberlake and Bob Dylan. In 2007, Johansson invited Pete Jorn to record for a joint album. According to the musician, he was very afraid that Scarlett could not sing and even agreed just in case with Zoe Deschanel, but, as it turned out, in vain – Johansson found a very clear and voluminous voice. The released album was called “Relator”.
In 2008, Scarlett Johansson released the solo album “Anywhere I Lay My Head”, however, the songs were cover versions of songs by Tom Waits, and critics strongly condemned the album, calling it “the main disappointment of the year.”
In 2016, viewers saw Scarlett Johansson in tandem with George Clooney and Josh Brolin in the comedy Long Live Caesar! the wise boa constrictor Kaa.
At the same time, the actress took part in the filming of “The First Avenger: Confrontation”, where her colleagues in the “superhero” shop have traditionally been Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Paul Bettany, and other “Avengers”.
In March 2017, another high-profile premiere featuring Scarlett Johansson took place. “The Ghost in the Shell”, a Hollywood adaptation of the cyberpunk anime of the same name, told the story of Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg dedicated to fighting cybercrime.
In parallel with the filming of the new Marvel films (“Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Finale”), Scarlett tried her hand at voice acting in cartoons. Her voice was spoken by the boa constrictor Kaa from The Jungle Book, the punk porcupine Ash from the cartoon The Beast, and the dog Almond from Wes Anderson’s animated masterpiece Dog Island.
SCARLETT JOHANSSON’S PERSONAL LIFE
In 2001, the 17-year-old actress briefly met musician Jack Antonoff.
After working on “Black Orchid” in 2004, the girl began an affair with Josh Hartnett, which lasted exactly two years.
In mid-2007, the actress met Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, and literally from the first sentences young people realized – their meeting is not accidental. It took less than a year for Ryan to make an offer to his lover. After a modest wedding, the newlyweds bought a small but cozy home in Los Angeles and began a family life full of harmony and understanding. Alas, the idyll lasted only two years; due to the busy schedule of filming, the couple saw each other less and less, until they realized that their feelings were finally extinguished.
In 2011, right after breaking up with Ryan, Scarlett found solace in Sean Penn’s chest, but never hid the fact that their relationship was not based on anything serious. In September 2011, Scarlett Johansson was at the center of a major scandal – hackers hacked her smartphone and made public her candid photos. In the fall of 2013, the actress revealed to the press the name of the new candidate; it turned out to be the French journalist Romain Dauriac. They were introduced by a common tattoo artist named Fusion.
The couple wanted to get married in January 2014, but due to the piquant position of the actress, the celebration had to be postponed. On September 4, 2014, baby Rose Dorothy Dauriac (the girl’s middle name was named after her grandmother Scarlett), daughter Johansson and her lover, was born, and on October 1, they exchanged oaths and rings. “Romain is the one who makes me smile every day,” the actress said in an interview immediately after the wedding.
But in March 2017, the star announced the beginning of the divorce process with her husband and immediately appeared in the company of screenwriter Colin Zhosta. The couple did not intend to hide their relationship from the press and happily flaunted the red carpets of various social events.
Three months later, the paparazzi caught her in an Italian restaurant. While eating her portion of pasta, Scarlett flirted nicely with a young man who quickly identified Kevin Jorn, a famous lawyer from the world of show business. At the same time, officially the actress was still married. Leaving the restaurant, they went for a walk, holding hands nicely. However, in the spring of 2019, the windy actress gathered under the crown with Colin. In May, Agent Scarlett confirmed that she was engaged and preparing for the wedding.
SCARLETT JOHANSSON NOW
In 2018, the actress received the lead role in Rupert Sanders’ film “Rub & Tug” (translated as “Massage Salon”, but in English, this expression means a sexual service that can be obtained from a masseuse for an additional fee). Her character had a real prototype – a transgender Gene Mary Jill, the owner of a massage parlor brothel, who lived in America in the ’70s. Born in a woman’s body, she turned into a man and got a girlfriend.
However, Scarlett resigned after the outrage of the LGBT community. “A transgender must play a real transgender,” activists said, and the actress and filmmakers followed suit. In August 2019, American viewers saw Scarlett in the festival drama “Marriage Story”, where together with Adam Driver, the actress tells about the divorce of a married couple whose life turns into a thriller due to a bunch of lawyers. The creators of the film have released two trailers depicting the situation on the part of each of the spouses.
The actress also played one of the key roles in the satirical comedy “Jojo’s Rabbit” about a German orphan boy who has an imaginary friend. This is none other than Adolf Hitler, only his image differs from the usual. The picture was not released in Russia, despite the pronounced anti-war character. In the early summer of 2021, rumors began to emerge that Scarlett was in an interesting position. She missed almost all the events dedicated to the release of the film “Black Widow”, and tried to avoid interviews. As a result, her husband, Colin Jost, dispelled all speculations during a performance in Connecticut – he confirmed that he and his wife are indeed expecting a child. The baby was born on August 18, 2021. The couple gave him an unusual name – Cosmo. this is the first joint child of the Avengers star and the 39-year-old comedian.
